Report Abuse -You might have to substitute a = 9.8 though.The tricky thing with these questions is that you have to determine which direction is up and which is down. You can choose this depending on what you want (it doesnt matter because it works out nicely).Report Abuse -For example you could say a = 9.8 which makes the down direction positive because gravity acts down.......
1) What is the equation that is used to find the instantaneous speed of a falling object that was dropped from rest?
2) What is the equation used to calculate the total distance an object has fallen from rest

-
1.
v = u + at.

v = instantaneous speed.
u = starting speed (0 because we started from rest).
a = 9.8 because that is the acceleration due to gravity.
t = time in seconds.

2.
s = ut + 0.5at^2
u = 0 because we start from rest.
a = 9.8
t = time in seconds.

Make sure you substitute the values in.

For example you could say a = 9.8 which makes the down direction positive because gravity acts down.
If you said a = -9.8 you are still right but you must say that the down direction is negative.

It doesn't matter which one you choose as long as you say which direction is positive/negative.

If you choose (as an example) a = NEGATIVE 9.8 that means when you do these questions, whenever you get a negative value for s it means you are more down than where you started, but if you get a positive s it means you are more up than where you started.

If you choose (as an example) a = POSITIVE 9.8 that means when you do these questions, whenever you get a negative value for s it means you are more up than where you started, but if you get a positive s it means you are more down than where you started.

If you are still confused I can explain this in another way.
