One of my friends accepts loop quantum gravity over string theory. Should we end our friendship

If Im not mistaken, all math is derived from basic axioms (i.e. by definition).......
What kind of delusional person believes that theory? I could deal with all their other problems, but this is too far. There is no way we'll ever be able to get along now. Should we end our friendship now, or is there a way I can show my friend they're crazy? — which they are.

Sorry dear, you're crazy. String theory is religion. It's internally mathematically consistent, but is completely empirically unverifiable. And since math is all made up anyways, it's a religious stance.

=)

Actually, I mean that literally. 1+1 = 2 not because it is true in some empirical sense, but because it is *defined* to be true. The fact that it is useful in the empirical world is just a coincidence. If I'm not mistaken, all math is derived from basic axioms (i.e. by definition).
