Propanolol is a beta blocker, a drug that blocks the effects adrenaline has on the body. It should be taken regularly, on a daily basis, rather than on an "as needed" basis. Taking it regularly means you will have better control of your symptoms.
Your prescription should have a dose on it, telling you when and how much to take. Usually, propanolol prescribed for anxiety comes in a sustained release tablet, meaning it will slowly release medication into the system over a period of time, so there will always be medication in your system to help control the anxiety.

You should always take your Propranolol in accordance with the instructions your doctor gave and that should be written on the pharmacy label. My understanding is that it is a medication that is normally taken every day at regular times in order to provide the intended benefit. If in doubt, you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
