In my mind, an alcoholic is not just someone who drinks a lot. An alcoholic is someone who alcohol ruins his life, costs him his job and his family and maybe even his home. My father in law was a big drinker but always had it under control, held down a responsible job, didn't drive his wife or kids away, etc. He's been dead for ten years now but I still make the joke about how he came home sober one day and the dog bit him. 8^)
If you can't get to sleep without drinking, well that's a -habit-, but not necessarily an addiction. I'm diabetic and I know a lot of diabetics who drink a glass of red wine every night at bedtime because that helps control your blood sugar during the night. I wouldn't call them alcoholics, even though if they ran out of wine one night they might have trouble getting to sleep!

An alcoholic is an addict. Addicts use drugs(alcohol is a drug) for how they make them feel and not any therapeutic relief. Also, addicts imbibe the substance despite any negative consequences that the substance may bring about. For example, if drinking drives away your family and friends but you do it anyway, you are an addict. One drink at bedtime is not going to negatively affect your health unless you have liver problems, or one drink leads to another.
So, only you can answer this question. The fact that you are asking is worrisome.
