Small children are usually anesthetized for MRI because movement will make the images worthless.
Different places do the anesthesia differently, but it will be general. The challenge is that we can't get anything metal too close to the MRI magnet, so anesthesia machines and infusion pumps have to be specially made or kept well away.
Sometimes we use anesthesia gases to keep kids asleep, and sometimes we use iv medications.
If your child is having an MRI, call and ask.

None. an MRI is a non-invasive procedure. They may give a child an anti anxiety medication like xanax or valium, but not an anesthetic.
