Math is “hard” because it is “different”.

When I went to college, I had 5 psych texts, 4 history texts, and a whole bunch of speech texts my first year. I had ONE math text. That text lasted through 4 semester courses (two years.)

You do not READ math books, you STUDY them. It is not unusual to spend 30 minutes to an hour on a SINGLE PAGE. Take a look at your last assignment or lecture, and count the number of pages between “yesterday’s” lesson and “today’s” lesson. NOW, do the same thing with the number of pages you had to read for your last English/History assignment.

Unfortunately, there is a great shortage of math teachers at the high school level. This has led to the assignment of “not so qualified” teachers attempting to teach mathematics. The principal has the option of putting an unqualified teacher in the math classroom or having NO teacher teaching math. Oftentimes, good coaches will be assigned to teach math, since they have to teach SOMETHING so they can continue to coach.

It gets no better at college. Oftentimes, the folks teaching math are teaching assistants (graduate students) that need support while they go to school. While they often KNOW math, there is no guarantee they can TEACH it. Many times they are assigned to areas outside their expertise. The objective is to support the graduate students, not teach math.

During my schooling, I had perhaps 100 different teachers. I went on to become a math teacher and department chair. After evaluating teachers, I realized that the problems I had with math (and other areas) were not problems with math--they were problems with math (and other) teachers. Out of those 100 teachers I experienced, I suspect that perhaps ten of them were “good teachers”. As such, I now say, “I got my degree from the university; I got my education from the university library.”
