About those brackets [ ] and parentheses I used ( ) when denoting the domain and range. This is called interval notation. If you already know about it, ignore this part. Interval notation is a less wordy way to tell someone exactly what the "interval" of domain and range are. A bracket [ or ] means that the number closest to it is included in the domain or range, while a parenthesis ( or ) means that the number closest to it is excluded.
(0, 1] means everything between 0 and 1, with 0 excluded, 1 included.
[0, 1) means everything between 0 and 1, with 0 included, 1 excluded.
An important note is that infinity is always preceded or followed by a parenthesis--never a bracket!

A function is a special type of relationship between two variables x and y where a single value of x corresponds to a single value of y. The domain of a function is all the values of x that is inputted into the function that has an output y. The range is all the values of y that is generated by x.

Imagine a simple 2-axis graph. When you input a value x on the x-axis, a function (eg. f(x)=y=2x+1) generates a y value for the x value you inputed. So at x=2, say, y=2(2)+1=5. At x=6, y=2(6)+1=13. The domain and range of these functions would be all the real numbers, written Domain = {a, a ∈ R}, Range = {a, a ∈ R}.

A parabola, however, either has a maxima or minima. If the parabola has a maxima at y=5, then Domain={y, y ∈ R}, Range={a, a ∈ R, a >= 5}
