i keep getting 1.25
how can the area be less than the lenght :s

You gotta be clearer... Is it area of a rectangle, a triangle, surface area of some shape? Is the area = 10 pts you provided supposed to be the answer?
If it's the area of a rectangle with L=2.5 and W=0.5, then the area would be 1.25, as you said. The area is not less than the length... You can't compare the two numbers because it's like comparing apples with bananas. Area is in meters squared (or whatever unit of length you're using squared, while length is in m (or whatever unit you're using).
If I had a super skinny rectangle that goes from here to the moon. the length would be huge, but if it's sooooo skinny that only one atom fits in between, then the area will be small, even though the length is so big.
I hope that clears it up for you.

Glad it helped... and thank you!

It is 1.25! Just picture it using 1x1 squares. If it is 2.5 squares long, however the height is only half of a square high, the area WILL be half of the length!
-
the answer is 1.25.
It is possible for the area to be more than the length because the width is less than 1.

Will assume that it is a rectangle.
A = L B
A = 2.5 x 0.5 m²
A = 1.25 m²
Fact!
Area and length are different measures.
One is m the other is m².
A = L B
A = 2.5 x 0.5 m²
A = 1.25 m²

area = L * W
Area = 2.5 * 0.5
Area = 1.25 or 5/4
Area = 2.5 * 0.5
Area = 1.25 or 5/4
-
1.25(unit of measurement)squared. It's smaller because the problem can be read as "0.5(half) of 2.5"
-
When decimals are involved, answers are often smaller.
A = L*W
A = 2.5m * 0.5m
A = 1.25m^2
A = L*W
A = 2.5m * 0.5m
A = 1.25m^2
-
multiplying by .5 is the same as multiplying by 1/2, you're cutting the number that it is multiplying with by half
-
It is basically divided by 2 because 0.5 is half of 1 which is the minimum number of Xing.
-
Yes, the area can be less than the length. The answer is A=1.25m^2
