Which is bigger: 8.3 x 5.5 x 2.4 inches OR 7.9 x 7.2 x 0.5 inches

in the 6th grade class I help they would see the 1st > 8 x 5 x 2 =80 while the 2nd is < 8 x 8 x 1/2 = 32

multiply the numbers together and see which is bigger...what's hard about this?
