A rectangle piece of fabric measures 5 2/5 yd long by 7 4/5 yd wide. What is the area of the fabric?

-
Multiply the length times the width:

5 2/5 = 27/5 as an improper fraction

7 4/5 = 39/5 as an improper fraction

27/5 * 39/5 = (27 * 39) / (5 * 5) = 1053 / 25

Convert that to a mixed number:

1053/25 = 42 3/25 square yards

-
Area = length * width

length = 5 + 2/5 = 27/5 yd
width = 7 + 4/5 = 9/5 yd

Area = 27/5 * 9/5 = (27*9)/(5*5) = 243/25 = 9 18/25 square yds

-
5 2/5 X 7 4/5, 5.4 x 7.8= 42.12 yds long
