Need help with a equation Maths Question

three times the first equation minus twice the second equation:6x + 9y = 69 –6x + 4y = 14–––––––––––5y = 55y = 11Plug this into either original equation:2x + 3(11) = 232x + 33 = 232x = -10x = -5x = -5, y = 11 ... LOOKS GOOD!–––––––––––––––––––––––-This is correct.......
The question is Solve the pairs of equation
2x+3y = 23
3x+2y = 7
I got that
x=-5 and y = 11 using substitution
but m not sure if its right
any help? Thanks in advance

Here's the elimination method (just to try something different) ... three times the first equation minus twice the second equation:

6x + 9y = 69 –
6x + 4y = 14
–––––––––––
5y = 55
y = 11

Plug this into either original equation:
2x + 3(11) = 23
2x + 33 = 23
2x = -10
x = -5

x = -5, y = 11 ... LOOKS GOOD!

–––––––––––––––––––––––

This is correct.

You can always plug your answers back into the equation to see if they will work out.

Subtitution works, or you can times the first equation by 3 and the second by -2 and treat it like a subtraction problems by cancelling out the 6x and the -6x it works out if you continue down the line. Substitution is the easiest to explain while I find that doing the equation type way to be easier for me.

Both ways will give you the correct answer. Whichever way works best for you, use it!

Good job!

You would use the elimination method.
Here's the working I did, I got x = -9 and y=17

2x + 3y = 23
3x + 2y = 7

2x + 3y = 23 (x2)
3x + 2y = 7 (x3)

4x + 6y = 66
9x + 6y = 21
-5x = 45
x = -9

sub x = -9 into any either two equations to check you are right.

3x + 2y = 7
(3 x -9) + 2y = 7
-27 + 2y + 27 = 7 + 27
2y = 34
y = 17

If you are still not convinced, into both answers into either of the two equations.

3x + 2y = 7
(3 x -9) + (2 x 17) = 7
-27 + 34 = 7

Hope this helps! :)

If you ever need to double check your answer, just plug in the values for the variables you solved, and the equations should end up as two equivalent numbers (like 1=1 or 3+3 = 4+2)
