Ok this is suppose to be easy but I keep getting the wrong answer and I don't know why! So the question is (-11) - (-2 x 8) and I keep getting 5 as my answer, but my teacher said it was suppose to be a negative 5. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong! Thanks!

You're already getting the right answer because your teacher is wrong.
Multiply the numbers inside the parentheses to get:
-11 - (-16)
Subtracting -16 from -11 is the same as adding 16 to it:
-11 + 16 = 5
Multiply the numbers inside the parentheses to get:
-11 - (-16)
Subtracting -16 from -11 is the same as adding 16 to it:
-11 + 16 = 5

(- 11) + (-1)(-2)(8) is another way to look at this problem.
Using order of operations multiplication would come 1st
(- 11) + (2)(8)
(-11) + (16 ) now add the answer is 5 ( positive 5)
or ( -11 ) - ( -16) = (-11) + (16) = 5
I also get 5. did you copy the question correctly?

you have to do the (-2x8) first...a negative times a positive is a negative so its (-2x8=-16) so then (-11)-(-16)= -5. because the differnce between -16 and -11 is -5. Its like 16-11...just negatives instead. haha

(-2 x 8) is negative 16. Negative 11 minus negative 16 is 5. Negative and a negative is a positive.

Yeah. I get 5 also.
Excel gets 5 also.
Are you sure that the equation is
-11 - (-2*8)

i got 5 too. did you write the problem down wrong? what are the directions
james vaughn:bro, difference is an ABSOLUTE VALUE which means there is 5 units between -11 and -16
