The State University Landscape Club wants to establish a horticultural garden near the adminstration building. The length and width of the space that is available are consecutive even integers, and the area of the garden is 440 square feet. Find the dimensions of the garden.

-
n*(n+2) = 440

n^2 + 2n - 440 = 0

n = [-2 +/- √ (4 + 4*440)] / 2

n = (- 2 +/- 42) / 2

n = 20 or -22

but, n > 0, so

n = 20

n + 2 = 22

Answer: 20 and 22.
