"The sun is about 1.5 • 10^11 m from earth. If the sun suddenly went out, about how many minutes would elapse before people on earth would know? (Hint: The speed of light is about 3 • 10^8 m/s.) Show your work."

Here is a trick my teacher taught me. When you are dealing with word problems that have scientific notation, look for these words to help know what to do:
"how many" - this tells you to multiply.
"how many times" - this tells you to divide.
So since this word problem has "how many", we know to multiply.
Multiply the numbers and add the exponents.
(1.5 • 10^11)(3 • 10^8)
4.5 • 10^19 <--- This is your answer!

time = distance / speed = 1E11 / 3E8 = 500 s
Which is 8.3333 minutes, which is 8 minutes 20 seconds...
Which is 8.3333 minutes, which is 8 minutes 20 seconds...
