Hi yahoo answers community xDDD

I'm doing test corrections in math and there's this problem I can't seem to figure out.

It says: "Simplify. Assume that the given variables represent real numbers. If there is no real solution, state so."

And under that, the problem is: Rad -100

How do I solve this??? Would it just be no solution because it is negative? Thanks for your help

There is no Real Solution here.
√-100 is not 10 because (10)² = 100. It's not -10 either because (-10)² = 100

There is however, an Imaginary Solution, but assuming you haven't learned about imaginary numbers yet, you would state there is No Real Solution as the directions say.

i is an imaginary number. i = √-1

√-100 is therefore equal to 10i. Because..

√-100 = √100 • √-1
. . . . . . . . ↓ . . . ↓
. . . . . . . .10 • . .i = 10i

The answer is 10i where i is an imaginary number. BUT because i is an imaginary number, 10i is also imaginary. If something is imaginary, it can't exist. So there is a solution (10i) but it doesn't exist. So you can put down no real solution.

√-100

it's an irrational solution, aka, does NOT use real numbers. so you would say there's no real solution, but outside of the question, just know that you can actually simplify this further.

√(-1 x 100)

√-1 x √100

i x 10

10i

-
The answer is that a real solution does not exist.
rad(-100)=rad(100)*rad(-1)=10*rad(-1) = 10i

( i tells us that the solution is a complex one, an imaginary one)

-
√-100
√-1 * √100
i * 10
10i

There is a solution, but it is not a real number.

okay im thinking -10 cause - time posivtive is - right......
