will he have enough money to put away, or will he have exceeded what he is allowed to spend?Show how you would estimate the answer to this problem first, then solve it.-ESTIMATE:DVD player + TAX is about $50 which is 1/4 of 200.Since 1/4 is less than 1/3 he can buy the player.......
Thomas has $200.00 that he has received for his birthday. His mother told him that he is allowed to spend 1/3 of the money and the rest will have to be put into his savings account. He wants to buy a DVD box set that sells for $45.99. After paying a 6% sales tax, will he have enough money to put away, or will he have exceeded what he is allowed to spend?

Show how you would estimate the answer to this problem first, then solve it.

-
ESTIMATE:
DVD player + TAX is about $50 which is 1/4 of 200. Since 1/4 is less than 1/3 he can buy the player.

SOLUTION:
The DVD box set costs $45.99 + 6% tax.
(Tax = 0.06 * 45.99 = $2.76).

therefore total cost of player is $45.99 + 2.76 = $48.75,

He is allowed to spend 1/3 of 200. This is 200 divide by 3 which equals $66.67.

So the DVD player is within the spending allowance, he can buy it!

-
Well, 1/3 of 200 = $66.66.

He must then save $133.33

He wants to spend $45.99 + 6% sales tax.

The sales tax equals $2.80 (roughly) (45.99 x .06)

$45.99 + $2.80 = $48.79

He's totally safe to buy the DVD. He'll have a little left over after savings.

-
$200.00 (times) .33 = about $66.66
$45.99 (times) .06 = $2.76
$45.99 + $2.76 = $48.75
So he would have enough

-
200/3 > x > 45.99(1.06)

66.67 > x > 48.75
