A room measures 20 x 40 ft. and has a 10 ft. ceiling. A fly is in one of the upper corners of the room. The fly walks down a wall and across the floor to the diagonally opposite corner of the room. The fly travels by the shortest route. How far does it walk?

-
1. Down the wall = 10'

2. Diagonal =

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

400 + 1600 = c^2

2000 = c^2

diagonal = sq rt of 2000 = 44.7

Total distance: 10 + 44.7 = 54.7

Go find an empty tissue box to solve this problem. Seriously, go get one, and come back with it.

Okay, are you back? Cool. Now, what I want you to do is to cut the box open. But first label two of the diagonally opposite verticies. Then, FLATTEN the box. The shortest distance is now actually just the straight line projection from those two opposite points. Draw this line, and that will be the shortest distance.
