What is the answer to this equation 6÷2(1+2)=

Can someone please clarify!-Some questions are purposefully worded in a way that makes the answer obscure. It has to be employed.......
There is an argument as to whether it is 9 or 1. Personally i think that it is 1, because by following BIDMAS (Brackets Indices Division Multiplication Addition Subtraction) you have to completely resolve the brackets first, which means 6÷2(1+2)=6÷2(3)=6÷6=1. I also typed the full calculation in to my calculator and it also gives the answer as 1. Can someone please clarify!

What it boils down to is the associative property of mathematics. It has to be employed. Without it, in this particular problem, the question is INTENTIONALLY ambiguous. The truth is, there is no correct answer. Its like asking a question without using real words

Most who try to answer this question assume that there was an extra set of (very necessary) parenthesis in the equation. For the people who chose 9 as the answer: (6/2)(2+1) and this would be correct. For the people who chose 1, 6/(2(2+1)), and in this case one would be correct.

Finally, without all those extra parenthesis to guide you, this question is essentially unanswerable, and neither 9 nor 1 is the correct answer because there is no question.

Why is everyone asking this all of a sudden?
Parentheses first.
Then multiplication and division LEFT TO RIGHT!
6/2 BEFORE multiplying by 3.
Your calculator did NOT say the answer is 1 unless you plugged it in incorrectly.

The answer is 9.
I bet my manhood on the answer being 9.

-
6/ 2(1+2)
parenthesis first
6/2*3
then multiplication or division from left to right
so the division first 6/2 = 3
3*3 = 9
this is a tricky question the teacher is making sure that you use your rules of operations correctly

-
you are doing it wrong. you are right about bidmas but you multiplied before you divided. the correct sequence should be 6/2(1+2)= 6/2(3)= 3(3)= 9

-
The answer is nine. It would be 6 divided by 2 times 3. When you get to this stage in the equation you always work from left to right. Therefore, 6 divided by 2 is 3 times 3 is 9.

-
Definitely 1
It'll only be 9 if it was (6/2)(1+2)
Your working is correct 100% certain :)

-
6/2(1+2)=

6/2 times 3=

3 times 3 = 9

-
I think it's 9 because of what my maths teacher told me or it could be 1 but I worked1 out differently to you

-
it must be 9...BIDMAS rule also will give you 9.

-
following BIDMAS it is 1 and I would say that is the correct answer

-
sorry 9 not 1
