1) The product of two positive numbers is 5. Determine the two numbers if one is 4 more than the other.

2) The area of a rectangle is 27 square feet. Determine the length and width if the length is 3 times the width.

-
1) X*Y=5
X=4+Y
plug into the first formula the second formula
(4+y)*y=5=4y+y^2
y^2+4y-5=0=(y+5)(y-1)
y=-5 or 1
since it has to be positive, y=1
plug y=1 into the second formula and you get x=5

2) l*w=27
l=3w

same method
3w*w=27
w^2=9
w=+/-3 since it is a length it has to be positive sow w=3
l=3*w=9

-
1) x = first number
x + 4 = second number
4 + x squared = 5
x squared = 1
x = 1

first number: 1
second number: 5
5 x 1 =5

2) x = width
3x = length
3x squared = 27
x squared = 9
x = 3

width: 3 square feet
length: 3 x 3 = 9 square feet
