learn it on their own or do they learn it in class ?
I'm asking cause I'm trying to learn algebra on my own (I'm taking a fundamentals of math class at my local community college) and it's very hard.
Should I wait till I take the class ? (Spring 2012) Or try to learn it now on my own ?

I'm a student myself.
Personally, I am able to learn and understand most things by learning it myself. For example, if I was to read a text book on Biology, Economics, Business, Geography, Chemistry etc I can understand it very well.
However, with Maths, despite it being my most favourite subject, I have found it very difficult to understand through reading a book. Maths is not like other subjects. It's not easy to understand it without an actual demonstrator showing how things happen and actually talking through you with the methods. Math books/internet help me in the revision AFTER I have learnt from the teacher. To understand a completely new concept just by reading a book is very difficult, ESPECIALLY if it's a completely new concept. Not saying it's impossible but it's difficult in comparison to other subjects.
If I were you, I would perhaps wait but if you're really interested then I don't see no harm in trying to pick up a bit from books/internet whatever. I don't know what kind of sources you would be learning from if you were to do it yourself. I've just been mentioning books but if you have perhaps Interactive CDs or you know a website which teaches and shows interactive demonstrations then those would be very useful. Whether, you decide to do it yourself depends on the type of resources you will utilise.
