It's a solid state diode. A vaccum tube diode will, when it's filament is energized, prioduce a "thermionic" voltage between the cathode and anode.

Any diode not subjected to an outside energy source will do exactly that. And, have no current flow through it.

shorted is right, a good diode will have a voltage drop of about .7 volts if its silicone or .3 volts if its germanium.
