What is the use of thermodynamics? In real life

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-06-10] [Hit: ]
thermo is the most useful knowledge in M.E.-Making more efficient steam turbines, gas turbines, jet engines, heat pumps,......
This is the main basis of designing an Air-conditioning system. All heat transfer analysis, Heat load analysis and everything concerning heat is within the scope of thermodynamics.
And also, especially in an POWER PLANT SYSTEM

agree with one answer, thermo is the most useful knowledge in M.E.

Making more efficient steam turbines, gas turbines, jet engines, heat pumps, refrigerators, distillation columns, oil refinery columns, air separation columns, cryogenics, diesel engines, sterling engines, gas engines, 2 cyle motors, rocket motors, snow makers, ice machines, and heat sinks for electronics etc

I'm a former mechanical engineer and I still find thermodynamics to be the most useful and interesting subject out there with huge potential especially in transportation. I think with good design that a heat engine can be made for a car that easily gets a 100 mpg. The secrets lie in the utilization fully of all the heat that is wasted now in the typical car engine (radiator, engine surface, exhaust, too many moving frictional parts etc)

To evaluate, to design, choosing, to understand principle of work, to evaluate claim of performance of manufacturer, etc of any thermal system, by combination of fluid mechanic, heat transfer, and any other subjects.
