This wiki article is good: in response to your edit it explains in detail Mayan phases of our world... and mentions why archaeologists don't believe this 2012 crap.

-The Mayan calendar ends at that point. So, someone wrote a book about it.
-It was believed planet X would crash into the earth. So, someone wrote a book about it.
-Greenhouse gasses exist in our atmosphere. So, someone wrote a book about it.
-We have enough nuclear bombs to decimate all of our cities several times. I'm sure someone wrote a book about it.
There's several things that can kill us all. However, not all of them true. Planet X was found never to exist, and the global warming debate is fuelled by politics, not science (not saying it's untrue, but Al Gore made a lot of conclusions.) And someone always gets rich by writing about it. We as human beings want to believe our life has meaning, and we want to be the last living generation. But to say that the world will spontaneously die in 2012 is just stupid.

I just checked my calendar, and I believe it when it says this is 2012, so to your top question, yes, and because my calendar has never lied to me.
As for the end of the world, only fools and cultists believe in that--but I repeat myself

No one knows when the end of the world is. I desperatly hope is not new years, but who knows? The point is live life for today, you are lucky no matter how hard life is.

2012 is the year we are in now. There is nothing to believe or disbelieve about that.
Perhaps you should be more specific.
