There have been about 514 Leap Years since Caesar created the Mayan Calender in 45BC. Without the extra day every 4 years, we would already be in the year 2013.

Also, the Mayan calendar did not account for leap year…. so technically the world should have ended many months ago.

Yes the world is eventually going to end, when our sun starts dying, becomes a red giant, and the coronal mass expands out beyond our orbit.

Regarding 2012, the Mayan civilization has been around for a long, long time. And, the people who made up this civilization had been there for thousands and thousands of years. So, lore had been passed down from generation to generation about the world ending as they know it. And, it's believed that the passing of civilizations of these people coincided with climate change on our planet.

That is, our planet oscillates through periods of especially warm weather and especially cold. So, if one civilization were thriving during a warm period and it then started getting too cold to live there (like a mini ice age), that civilization would either perish or have to move. Either way, it would be the end of life as they know it.

So, the Mayans apparently figured out that there is a definite cycle to climate changes on our planet and they based their calendar on that period. And, the date they picked as the end of their calendar is December 21 of 2012. But, that doesn't mean that there will be any giant cataclysm to mark that particular date. It might just be that this is around the time that they anticipated some climatic or geological change would occur that would signal the end of their civilization as they know it.

No. There is no scientific evidence that shows our world will end that soon.

In fact, the Mayan calendar merely ends there-it does not suggest anything about a catastrophe like those trollers say. They have nothing better to do than distract people. Pay no heed to them.
