Do you worry britains in danger of any major earthquakes due to fracking

i just saw on the local news before about the dangers of fracking....the people who do the bstard fracking saying that theres little danger of earth movement......but ordinary people are worried and think different ?

i feel angry that these rich companies could be responsible for things even like minor quakes..

they deserve harsh penalitys in my book.

anyway, do you think theres any risk?

Earthquakes are impossible to forecast. We are lucky in the UK because we are situated on a very stable part of the earth's crust and severe earthquakes do not happen here. But we do experience minor tremors and the very occasional earthquake up to about 5.0 on the Richter scale. The earth has hundreds of earthquakes per day at the 1.0 level but these can only normally be experienced by special instruments. UK has recently had several quakes that have caused minor damage and were at the 4.0 size. Some of those were from known faults but others from unknown faults. So UK earthquakes are not so frightening but does Fracking cause them? No real conclusion has been gained either from the BGS nor the USGS, probably the two most respected geological organizations in the world, as both say that Fracking might or could cause a minor size 1-2 magnitude quake there is no definite data to show they do.
To get a feel for a quake of 1-2 magnitude it is similar to a heavy lorry passing about 50 yards away. Hardly life threatening.

I don't think you fully understand the way plate tectonics create earthquakes. Earthquakes are usually due to subduction and built pressure. This is pressure strong enough to turn coal into a diamond. Basically, you're talking about one plate moving under another, with most plates holding full continents and oceans. Fracking has about enough risk of increasing earthquakes, as your cat when digging to bury his poop.
