Your dome features were liquid magma pushed up through softer rock millions of years ago. There wasn't enough pressure from underneath to push them all the way to the surface (you'd get a volcano if that happened), so they slowed to a stop and cooled into solid granite stuck underground, still holding a teardrop shape pointing upward.
Millions of years later, but still eons ago, the entire landscape was pushed upward (uplifted) as the North American tectonic plate pushed westward. The softer rock was then exposed and weathered away. The last bits were carved away by glaciers only thousands of years ago. Your domes were then left exposed for all to enjoy.

Because the granites were not exposed when they formed. Plutons form deep below the surface where they cool slowly enough to form the large crystals which differentiate them from rhyolite, but are forced to the surface during orogeny. As the pressure from above is reduced by erosion the granite exfoliates along parallel sheet joints forming the dome shape.
