"Mineral" as opposed to "vegetable" oil, not that it contains minerals. Its a petroleum distillate.
Apparently "mineral oil" is not a precise term and could mean one of several different distillates. A similar term "mineral spirits" refers to common paint thinner.
ADDED: The mineral oil used in medicine and in some foods (releasing agent for some baked goods, for example) would be liquid paraffin or liquid petrolatum. The claim is that these two pass through the digestive tract without being absorbed, or are absorbed in very small quantities.

It is nothing more than sources are either "vegetable" or "mineral". Since it comes from oil, it is mineral. There are dozens of grades of mineral oils and they can have very different uses.
