Substances that are polar like to dissolve polar substances, and nonpolar dissolves nonpolar.Soap is made by taking very nonpolar fatty acids and exposing them to a strong base (NaOH, KOH), which rips off the end and caps it with an OH-, making the end polar.......
1) Explain why soap and not water can dissolve oil?

2) Describle how can soap interact with both water molecules and non polar molecules.

3) Imagine that you want to observe the reaction between substance A and substance B. You discover that initally, the reaction occurs very quickly but slows down after a minute or so.

1.)
Water is a very polar molecule, meaning that charge is not distibuted evenly. There are "+" parts, and "-" parts, because the electrons are not shared equally by atoms.

Oil is very nonpolar. Its generally long, junky organic molecules that don't have any particular region hoarding electrons.

Substances that are polar like to dissolve polar substances, and nonpolar dissolves nonpolar.

Soap is made by taking very nonpolar fatty acids and exposing them to a strong base (NaOH, KOH), which rips off the end and caps it with an OH-, making the end polar.

So you mix soap and water and wash oil. The nonpolar end of the soap grabs the oil, and the new polar end gets grabbed by the water, which pulls along the oil and cleans.

(2 was answered up above as well, Soap has BOTH polar and nonpolar ends).

3.)I'm not sure what you're asking with this one, I imagine it might be rate law or kinectics based, though. If this happens very quickly, it likely means that there is a lot of potential energy in the reaction and it is probably exothermic. There may be a catalyst (substance C) invovled that "fits" the reactants together at a much quicker rate.

1. The detergent part of soap emulsifies lipids (fats) which is the main component of oil.
2.the question is stupid.
3.this is because there is less substance in which for a reaction can occur. Same principal as why when there are no reactants left no reaction will occur.
