Russia's first manned orbital flight, USA's first suborbital flight - 1961
Russia later sent up 2-man crews, the first woman, performed the first space walk, 1963-1965
USA sent up two missions simultaneously, performed rendezvous, 1966
USA performed first manned moon shot, 1968, Russia sent up first space station, Salyut, 1969.
USA sent first manned lunar landing, 1969.
1970s:
Apollo 13 was a near-disaster, April, 1970, after that, Apollo landings continue to December, 1972
Russian space stations and crews manning them occur throughout most the 1970's.
USA sends up Skylab, 1973 - is manned by 3 crews through 1974
USA & Russia dock in orbit, the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, 1975
USA begins glide tests for the Space Shuttle, 1977-78

Russian builds first multi-module space station, Mir,
USA sends up first Space Shuttle, 1981
USA announces plans for space station "Freedom"

Russia, USA reach agreement on shuttle docking with Mir
Russia, USA, Japanese Space, and ESA start planning on ISS
First components of the ISS are launched 1997
Mir de-orbited
ISS becomes permanently manned
2000s:
ISS continues to evolve & expand
Shuttle, Soyuz missions to ISS continue
