the textbook says that in an aldol condensation the enolate and ketone/aldehyde combine...

Aldol reaction proceeds in two steps;
First step is addition
CH3CHO + CH3CHO --> CH3 CH(OH)CH2CHO in presence of NaOH
This is followed by loss of water leading to overall condensation
CH3CH(OH)CH2CHO ---> CH3CH=CHCHO + H2O
S0 its both addition as well as condensation
