Plant cells and animal cells have a an osmotic concentration of 0.9%

9% sucrose solution, or a 9.0% sucrose solution. Explain what is happening to these 3 cells.I believe that the cell placed in the 0.9% sucrose solution is isotonic and will stay the same size and shape because of the equal amount of solutes on the inside and out.......
So I think this question on my homework has to do with Diffusion and whether or not the cell is hypertonic, hypotonic, or istonic but need some clarification. The rest of the question is: Some plants cells and animal cells were put into either a 0.09% sucrose solution, 0.9% sucrose solution, or a 9.0% sucrose solution. Explain what is happening to these 3 cells.

I believe that the cell placed in the 0.9% sucrose solution is isotonic and will stay the same size and shape because of the equal amount of solutes on the inside and out. It's the other two that I keep getting confused on. I need an explanation on what the other two solutions will do to the cells. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

Think of it as a sponge. 0.9% is normal saline. 9.0 has more solutes so the cell will shrink because the solutes act like a sponge and pull water out. .09% will cause the cell to absorb more water because there is less solutes in the solution than there is in the cells so it equal the concentration between the inside and outside of the cell, the cells take on more till they burst. Just imagine the solutes as sponges and the solutes pull the water with them.

If it helps you, draw a picture. An isotonic solution has 9 dots inside it and 9 dots outside. It's equal so there is no net water movement (equal water movement back and forth between the cell and the solution).

A solution of 0.009% (hypotonic) has let's say 2 sponges on the outside and 9 sponges on the inside of the cell. The sponges take up water so the cell takes on water and grows in size till possibly bursting.

A solution of 9.0% (hypertonic) has 90 solutes/sponges on the outside and 9 solutes on the inside. The water moves out of the cell towards the higher concentration of sponges. So the cell shrinks.
