Chemistry help? Why use filter paper instead of evaporation to collect a solid.

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-12-13] [Hit: ]
Im so confused >.the balanced chemical equation for the reaction isNaCo39(aq) + CaCl2(aq)> CaCo3(s) + 2NaCl(aq)-If you evaporate off all the water, both the sodium chloride AND the calcium carbonate will be left in the flask; once all the water is gone, the NaCl that was dissolved in the water will solidify. Filtration is better in this case because only the CaCO3 is collected; the NaCl is dissolved in the water, and passes through the filter whereas the CaCO3 does not.......
in chemistry were doing this lab were we are adding calcium chloride solution and a sodium carbonate solution then pouring it threw a filter paper to strain the solid.
why use a filter paper instead of the evaporation method to obtain the solid.
will a different solid be obtained? will it be harder to weigh the solid afterwords?
I'm so confused >.<
the balanced chemical equation for the reaction is
NaCo39(aq) + CaCl2(aq) > CaCo3(s) + 2NaCl(aq)

NaCo39 One sodium and 39 Cobalts? I DONT THINK so.
Threw? Fail.
Sodium Carbonate is Not NA CO3 nor is it Na(CO3) 9 nor 8,7,6,5,4,3,nor 2.
I might mention that it is obvious.
Filtration separates solids from liquids and dissolved solids, liquids and gasses
Evaporation separates volatiles from non volatiles.
I might also mention that not only is it obvious but anybody capable of thinking their way out of a phone booth should be able to figure it out - if they tried.
Exactly how effective do you think filtration would be in filtering sugar out of water? What would remain on the paper.
Exactly how effective do you think it would be to evaporate a salt solution that has silica dispersed in it? What would remain?
try thinking.

Well if you want the weight of JUST the calcium carbonate, it is insoluble in water while NaCl is. so the NaCl while filter through. Also, calcium carbonate decomposes at high temperatures.

Evaporation will yield a mixture of all four compounds (products and reactants). As CaCO3 is the only insoluble species, filtering the solid followed by washing with excess water will remove all but the desired product.
