Using the spdf notation, write the electron configurations for atoms of chromium and iron, two of the major components of stainless steel. (Type your answer using the format 1s2 2s2 for 1s^2 2s^2.)
This is what i put:
Cr
1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d4
Fe
1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d6
I got Fe correct and Cr wrong; I used the exact same method and am thoroughly confused.

oh i cant remember why, but Cr is a "special exception". You're supposed to add one or substract one electron from 3d4, but im not sure. Try looking on google, or hopefully someone else knows.

lol yeah sorry, i was going to put that perhaps the teacher mislooked, but no there is something about the Cr atom that is special.
