i am doing my chemistry homework, and we are balancing equations. how do i find what the product will be based on the reactants?

It takes a lot of practice. As you see more and more equations you'll get used to what reacts with what to produce what.
Sometimes there is a precipitate, to know this you need to know insoluble ions
Sometimes there is combustion, which almost always involves oxygen, this produces CO2 and H2O
Sometimes two reactants simply combine together to form something else, this includes regular products and sometimes complex ions
Sometimes there is an oxidation-reduction reaction in which the formal charges of the reactants change, it takes practice to know whether or not something will reduce or oxidize something else
Sometimes there is a neutralization reaction, in which an OH- and H+ combine to form H2O
There are many other reactions, these are just some of the more common ones. If you want to get good, PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE, and be sure you practice right, make sure you check to see if you're getting things right, or just guessing everything wrong
