Does this disprove evolution

At the work place me and my buddy always discuss whether god exists, the illuminate and pretty much how the world works and how it came to be what it is today.

Today we talked about evolution, and he brought up a strong point against evolution.. He said, "What is evolution?" I replied, Evolution is the process by which organisms adapt to their environment to increase the chance of survival. He followed by saying, "If evolution is based upon survival, then why did single celled organisms that can live for hundreds of years evolve? If they can live in harsh enviornments and survive ice ages, why did they change?" From here I replied, functionality, we can do more, see, touch, smell, hear, and so on... He says "Why do we have all that" I reply, too increase the chance of survival... He replies "humans are defenseless without their creations, all we have is intelligence, that doesn't support why we adapted if evolution is based upon survival."

Interesting conversation, I was curious of the thoughts of other people on the matter.

Evolution is not "the process by which organisms adapt to their environment to increase the chance of survival". It is the process by which those organisms which survive to reproduce impact the subsequent generations of a population by passing on the traits which enabled them to survive. When organisms reproduce in an environment with finite resources (every environment has finite resources), the organisms must either compete for those resources or find them elsewhere. Organisms are resources and larger organisms can engulf smaller organisms. Multicellularity is a way to form larger organisms.

Intelligence is just one trait that can impact survival, but not the only one.

Curious, but humans lack of adaptations against predation doesn't do so well for a divine maker either. Interesting question, far more interesting that anything regarding evolution I've seen on R & S, cudos to your friend.
