Mine, at least are about the same distance from that mid line.
Anyhow, "further from the mid-sagittal plane" is called "lateral" (closer is "medial").
Proximal means closer to the origin.
The knee is closer to the trunk (the origin of the lower limb) than the ankle is.
That's why the knee is proximal to the ankle.
And the ankle is distal to the knee.
