The nucleotide bases on the active side of the DNA molecule are taken in triplets (called codons), and they determine the genetic code because each codon represents an amino acid which will be added to form protein molecules. Since protein molecules can be enzymes, which control every chemical reaction in the cell, and they may also be structural proteins which determine cell structure, tissues, organs and outer appearance.
The process involves two kinds of RNA molecules and occurs at the ribosomes, but DNA codes for all protein synthesis, which determines both chemical and physical phenotypes of the person (or other organism).
