Can it happen with dead cells? Is the transport protein 'alive'? Can active transport happen in non-biological situations like diffusion can? Or is it just reserved for use inside living things?
These may sound really silly questions, but I'm revising for my Biology GCSE, so its probably better to wonder now than in my exam!

Yes. Active transport requires energy (ATP) and functional proteins, which are only found in living cells.

Yes, active transport only happens wid living cells. No, it does'nt happens wid dead cells. It does'nt transports protein but it only transports minerals and salts. This is so because minerals have higher conc. inside root cell than outside(to aid osmosis), therefore to carry out active transport energy is required(by using ATP) to transport minerals from their low conc. to higher conc. which only living cells can provide. Remember-active transport occurs in root cells only.
