Will December 21st really be 3 days of darkness

A friend told me about it and its worrying me

I've been trying to track the source of this rumor. And I think I have figured out where it comes from.

Last year, NASA was talking about solar storms and solar flares, and the possibility that they can knock out communication and possibly even take out a power grid. No big deal. Its happened before.

But some people have misunderstood, and taken it to mean that they were predicting that the power would be knocked out for several days, causing a blackout.

And more people have misunderstood, and taken it to be that there would be a world wide power outage. A global blackout.

And then people have tied it to two end of the world myths, one being the catholic "three days of darkness" and the other being the Mayan calender ending (which reminds me, my calendar runs out at the end of december, and I need to get one for 2013).

In all, the whole thing is just a bunch of idiots panicking about some misinformation.

It's only half-true:
the part that it's true is called "night", the part that isn't true is called "day". Most people are used to it by now.

Therefore, this is a great opportunity for you to learn that
1) you can't trust your friend;
2) you should pay more attention to your math and science classes, so you don't get duped like this.
One of the most important things you'll learn in your math and science classes is that, instead of trusting people "just because" (like you're doing now), you should ask instead "how does that happen" and keep pressing for details. Most of the time, the people who are trying to dupe you are as ignorant as you are, and you quickly catch them in their ignorance and find out that they're just full of it.
