What is the bright star that comes up not long after the moon

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 12-11-12] [Hit: ]
-At 5am Venus would definitely be what you are seeing. The Moon moves several degrees eastwards w.r.t the stars each night so its position against other celestial bodies changes on a nightly basis.Surprising how many people think Polaris (the North star) is a bright star. It is actually about 2nd magnitude which puts it about on equal terms with the stars in the Plough.......
I was awake at 5:00 am this morning looked out the window and see this really bright star come up not long after the moon did, can anyone tell me what the star or planet is?
Many thanks Lr

That was the planet Venus. Isn't it a glorious sight?!

Surprising how many people think Polaris (the 'North' star) is a bright star. It is actually about 2nd magnitude which puts it about on equal terms with the stars in the Plough. The only signficant thing about Polaris is its proximity to the northe celestial pole (NCP). Even so it is still about 2/3 of a degree or slightly more than one Moons diameter away from that.

Its the planet Venus. Its been bright in the eastern sky before sunrise for several weeks and will continue to be bright before sunrise for the rest of the year and into the new year.

-
Well Venus is rising just before the moon but you did really well to see that since it's very nearly a new moon.

-
Venus or Jupiter. But I think Venus is in the morning. A general rule is that planets don "twinkle" that way that stars do

-
The north star?
