Report Abuse -Not a star, its an airplane.......
I am located in Kansas City and it is 11:30 PM July 13, 2012. There are two stars in the southwest portion of the sky at a slight diagonal to each other and the lower star is flashing. I see these two stars nightly but have never noticed the one flashing as it is tonight. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

The two "stars" low in the southwest at 11:30 p.m. are the planet Saturn (upper) and the star Spica (lower. Here you have a perfect demonstration of the difference between a planet and a star: the planet shines with a steady light, because it has a sizable disk, whereas the star shows twinkling or scintillation because it is a point source. Good observation!

Keep an eye out for the planet Mars approaching these two from the right over the next few weeks.
