I have long been a fan of the late Sir Arthur C. Clarke. 'The Fountains of Paradise' has been one of my favorite books since it came out. Other great novels of his include 'The Deep Range', 'Imperial Earth', 'Earthlight', 'The Songs of Distant Earth', 'Rendezvous With Rama' and the four '2001' books. He was also a great short story writer, collected in 'Tales of the White Hart', 'The Nine Billion Names of God', 'Tales of Ten Worlds' and 'The Wind from the Sun', among others. If his name was on a publication, I have read it at least once. Currently I am re-reading 'The Sands of Mars'. I envy you for having met him. One of the world's great minds. He will be missed.

The Space Oddysey series: 2001, 2010, 2061, and 3001.
Islands in the Sky, which I think has some sequels.
If you want a less well-known work, try Richter 10, about a man's quest to end earthquakes set against a backdrop of an America blighted by nuclear war, owned by the Chinese, and split by race.
