IBM has been able to develop a "microscope" that can actually measure the Atomic Deflection of atoms! This "Atomic Deflection" is a force that basically says "two physical objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time".
This new "microscope" DOES allow the view to see the images of individual atoms, and the shape of molecules. This was first used to "see" a chemical that was made up of Benzene Rings, a special arrangement of Carbon and Hydrogen atoms. It was THOUGHT, using chemical theory, that Benzene Rings had a hexagonal shape. using this new "microscope", they could actually SEE the hexagonal shape of the Benzene Rings -- and they ARE Hexagonal.
What is interesting about this "microscope" is that is does not use light or xrays or even radio waves, but it uses a SINGLE CARBON MONOXIDE MOLECULE as a "probe" to measure this Atomic Deflection force.
In my opinion you are thinking about this way to hard. FIrst off I would say that 99% of the science community believes that the universe is still expanding and therefore technically goes off to infinity (distance). At the same time we are also finding smaller and smaller particles at the subatomic level, and again technically you could "zoom" in infinitely smaller. Being in the "middle" as you put it is all relative so there is neither a right or wrong answer to use being in the middle between to infinities so to speak. And as for your second question I have already answered that; it is possible to zoom in or out infinitely larger.
