I am doing an astronomy project and I am totally lost. I have to determine how many degrees away from true west the sun sets everyday. Please help. the project says something about a protractor and my professor has not answered my emails over two weeks.

True west is azimuth 270 degrees.

Try again. You are still insulting and mocking teachers.

The location of the sun relative to the cardinal directions (north/east/south/west) is known as azimuth. North corresponds to 0 degrees azimuth, east 90, south 180, west 270.

As others have mentioned, the azimuth of the sun at sunset depends on both your location and on the day of the year.

For Denver, the extreme azimuths occur as follows:

- On the summer solstice (June 20 this year), the azimuth at sunset is 302.0 degrees. That's 32.0 degrees north of west.

- On the winter solstice (December 21 this year), the azimuth at sunset is 239.7 degrees. That's 30.3 degrees degrees south of west.

These two numbers (32.0 and 30.3) are not quite identical because of the details of the definition of sunset (when the upper limb disappears, taking atmospheric refraction into account).

About 12.5 degrees, as a matter of fact.

Wolfram|Alpha is an amazing tool

Azimuth is the direction of something from true North, the angle increases toward the east. True West is 270°.

It will depend on what your latitude is and the time of year.

The good thing is you can take your subject line and put it into google and find some very useful information.

It changes every day due to the tilt of Earth's axis, and the movement of Earth around the sun.
