Mars is a desert by Earth's standards, and with a thin atmosphere almost all carbon dioxide you would indeed need a spacesuit. However, while it does have regular dust storms the thinness of the atmosphere means they would be nothing like as severe as sandstorms on Earth. One passing though would leave everything covered in dust and needing a good clean, but do no real damage.

Well, ..., BUT more like the Gobi desert and 3 times as cold. However, it's not impossible we have humans living at extreme temperatures near that of Mars so man should be able to do it. We just need more air pressure and oxygen there.
