before our sun turns into a red giant? Afterwards, about how long will it take before the earth is consumed by the sun?

The sun is about 5 billion years old, and is said to be about half way through its life cycle. Right now its a main sequence star, because is has a mass/luminosity relationship as it fuses hydrogen in its core. In a 2-4 billion years or so, fusion will slow as it runs out of hydrogen to fuse, and gravity will contract the core until helium starts to fuse, which will push out the outer layers and make the sun a red giant. I'd say in a couple billion years to a few billion years.

Hi neighbor..! Portland here.
It's impossible to nail down any specific times for precisely when the sun will become a red giant. Since we can't do that, it's just as impossible to say exactly when Earth will be consumed. The best we can do is guesstimate that the sun will leave the main sequence in about 4.5- to 5-billion years.
