The coincidence is meaningless. But for illustrative purposes, it acts as a mental crutch to try to understand the vastness of the universe. It is easy to pick up a handful of sane then imagine how many grains there must be in cubic miles of the stuff. Yet people generally have no idea how many stars there are.
As a corallary to this exercise: just imagine that nature has kindly etched a copy of the Declaration of Independence on the surface of one of those grains by the forces of wind and wave. That grain could be anywhere in the world. Estimate how much time you would need to find that particular grain, and compare it to the known age of the universe.
Now you realise how impossible it would be to find the Sun and Earth from any arbitrary point in space.
Cheers!
