I just moved to Garden Grove, CA and have encountered a couple black spiders a little bigger than a dime that have short hair and about three red marks on its back. The marks are spread out, now I'm not sure, but they may have had a face shape but I don't know how well I made that out. I know theres a spider like it with a face shape but it might be something similar. Thanks!

I think it is probably a jumping spider.

I too live in Southern California. We have both black widows and black jumping spiders in my yard. I don't mind the jumping spiders. They just jump away.

I think jim z is right on, these are likely jump spiders in the phidippus Johnsoni group.
often called red backed jump spiders or 'Johnson jumpers'.
There are about 20 other species native to Orange county, and these are quite common.
These are harmless spiders and can even easily be handled.
