it was probably about an inch long, may be more
legs seemed proportionally right, but they were really think
and it had a stupidly large abdomen (however it's spelt) but it seemed to have a white/silver crescent on the abdomen, near it's head
i live on the south coast of england if that helps
chances are it's not a dangerous spider or anything, but i absolutely hate them since i got bitten by one (yeah english spiders do bite)
also don't have pics as i put it outside

Well, Steatodas often have a light colored line curving around the front of the abdomen, like you describe, but like all Theridiids, they have globular abdomens and spindly, high-jointed legs. It's not easy to guess from your description, but it suggests to me a Jumping spider of some sort, or possibly a Crab Spider or maybe a Wolf Spider or possibly some other sort of spider. A photo really can make all the difference in the world! Thanks for not killling it, though - especially as you have good reason to be tetchy towards spders.
