The scientific name of a dog is Canis familiaris, what is the genus

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-06-07] [Hit: ]
This is to me untenable, because the domestic dog is not a geographic variant of the gray wolf, but a product of domestication and subsequent selective breeding.Even though the domestic dog is fully capable of hybridizing with wolves, this is also true of the coyote, which can fully hybridize with the wolf.......
family: Canidae (first letter ALWAYS capitalized, and last 2 letters ALWAYS end in "ae")

genus: Canis (first letter ALWAYS capitalized)

species: familiaris (first letter is ALWAYS in small letters)

Scientific name is composed of two parts:

genus name: Canis

specific name: familiaris

Please note that the specific name is NOT the same as the species name. The species name is the same as the scientific name and it always include BOTH the genus name and the specific name.

There are some scientists who classify the dog as a subspecies of the gray wolf. This is to me untenable, because the domestic dog is not a geographic variant of the gray wolf, but a product of domestication and subsequent selective breeding. Even though the domestic dog is fully capable of hybridizing with wolves, this is also true of the coyote, which can fully hybridize with the wolf. Coyotes are considered a distinct species from the gray wolf because it is ecologically and behaviorally different. Coyotes are loners, whereas wolves are pack animals. Coyotes usually hunt small mammals, such as mice, rabbits and birds, but wolves will hunt much bigger animals, including deer, caribou and even moose. Domestic dogs are also ecologically different than wolves, as they are dependent on humans for food and shelter.

The domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris and Canis lupus dingo) is a domesticated form of the gray wolf, a member of the Canidae family of the order Carnivora. The term is used for both feral and pet varieties. The dog may have been the first animal to be domesticated, and has been the most widely kept working, hunting, and companion animal in human history. The word "dog" may also mean the male of a canine species, as opposed to the word "*****" for the female of the species.

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
Family: Canidae
Genus: Canis
Species: C. lupus

Dogs were domesticated from gray wolves about 15,000 years ago. They must have been very valuable to early human settlements, for they quickly became ubiquitous across world cultures. Dogs perform many roles for people, such as hunting, herding, pulling loads, protection, assisting police and military, companionship, and, more recently, aiding handicapped individuals. This impact on human society has given them the nickname "Man's best friend" in the western world. In 2001, there were estimated to be 400 million dogs in the world.
I really hope this helped :)

The genus is Canis, since the scientific name is genus + species.
